Tunnbrödsrulle: The Ultimate Swedish Style Hot Dog

Anthony Bourdain once said that one particular Swedish street food was, “…the most disgusting thing ever…and I love it.”

Tunnbrödsrulle is served at many fast food establishments and snack bars in Sweden, just like any other hot dog you could pick up at your local gas station here in the States. But for those who’ve tried tunnbrödsrulle, they know it’s unlike any other hot dog.

Tunnbrödsrulle is comprised of mashed potatoes, sausage or hot dogs, lettuce, shrimp salad, mayonnaise dressing, onions, ketchup and mustard and is served wrapped up in a tortilla or flatbread. We know what you’re thinking – but this seemingly odd recipe isn’t odd at all, even Malin Åckerman likes it!

Making tunnbrödsrulle is simple, and like other cooking endeavors, it’s a process you can customize to your personal tastes.

  • 4 hot dogs or sausages
  • 4 flour tortillas
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • Lettuce
  • Butter (for frying the hot dogs)
  • Ketchup
  • Mustard
  • 2 tbsp. mayonnaise
  • 4 tbsp. sweet cucumber relish
  • Shrimp salad (see below)
  • Mashed potatoes


  1. Pan-fry hot dogs in skillet with butter until fully cooked.
  2. Lay out each tortilla and place a serving of mashed potatoes in the center of each.
  3. Place one hot dog on top of potatoes in the center of the wrap.
  4. In a small bowl, make mayonnaise dressing by missing 2 tbsp. of mayonnaise with 4 tbsp. sweet cucumber relish.
  5. Dress the hot dog with the mayonnaise dressing on one side and the shrimp salad on the other.
  6. Top with sliced lettuce and ketchup and mustard, as desired.

Shrimp Salad

  • 4-6 medium shrimp, peeled, grilled and diced
  • 2 tbsp. mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp. sour cream
  • 1 tsp. dill, chopped
  • 2 tsp. red onion, chopped
  • 1 tsp. lime juice
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  1. Mix together mayo, sour cream and lime juice.
  2. Add in shrimp, dill, red onion, salt and pepper. Mix.
