Who is Sverrir Gudnason? Meet the star of ‘Borg vs McEnroe’

One of the world’s greatest tennis stories hit the big screen in Sweden last summer, but “Borg vs McEnroe” finally has made its way to the States in a limited release.

The film stars Nordic actor, Sverrir Gudnason, who plays the titular role of Björn Borg. For the most part, Gudnason has had a successful career in Scandinavia, but we have a feeling folks in the United States will know his name soon enough.

Here are four things you should know about Gudnason.

  1. Gudnason was born in Sweden, raised in Iceland and has since returned to Sweden.

Looking at his credits on IMDB, he’s starred mostly in Swedish films and series, but there are a few Danish productions as well.

  1. He’s been cast as the next Mikael Blomkvist in “The Girl in the Spider’s Web.”

Gudnason is taking the character over from Daniel Craig, who starred in the Swedish adaptation of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.”

  1. He’s won two Guldbagge Awards, one for Best Actor in a Leading Role and one for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.

The Guldbagge Awards are Sweden’s annual film awards. He has received two additional nominations.

  1. He has continued to play tennis since his “Borg vs McEnroe” training wrapped.

In an interview with GQ, Gudnason said he plays tennis once a week – but now he has a bigger audience than he did before landing his breakout role. He also said that his training was so intense to play Borg, he inherited the tennis star’s form.
