Skål!!! Sweden Wins ‘Group of Death,’ Advances In World Cup
First, Sweden reached the World Cup by winning its qualifier against Italy, keeping the Italians out of the World Cup for the first time since 1958.
Now, the Swedes have done it again (despite the fact that some Italians were pulling for anyone but Sweden).
Sweden (2-1) knocked off Mexico (2-1), which led the Group F standings with two wins entering today, 3-0 to not only advance to the knockout round of the World Cup, but also win the “Group of Death.” In the process, the Swedes helped eliminate another power – Germany (1-2), the defending World Cup champion, finished last in Group F after a shocking 2-0 loss to South Korea (1-2).
Sweden and Mexico will move on to the knockout round, with the Swedes facing off against Switzerland, the Group E runner-up, on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Petersburg, Russia.
