Melodifestivalen 2019: And The Winner Is…

On Saturday in Stockholm, Melodifestivalen 2019 crowned its winner who will go on to represent Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest in May.

The big winner?

John Lundvik with his song “Too Late for Love.” Check out his winning performance, complete with a gaggle of gospel singers, below.

According to the Eurovision Song Contest, Lundvik, born and raised in Växjö, Sweden, grew up around music and sports (and a combination of the two). His song “All About the Games” was chosen as Sweden’s Olympic song for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

Lundvik told Eurovision in an interview after his big win, “This is amazing. It’s like the biggest receipt of success that I’ve ever received. I’m so grateful and thankful.”

The unique thing about Lundvik’s situation is that he’ll be heading to the Song Contest as a qualifier in two fields – as a writer for the United Kingdom and now as a singer/songwriter for Sweden. Of that, he told Eurovision he was all in on Sweden. “I’m a Swede, and I represent my country right now with this little [award], so, of course, it’s the Swedes.”

Lundvik will sing for Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv on May 16. A Swede has won the contest six times, most recently in 2015.
