All Hail ‘The King:’ Enjoy Greatness Of Lundqvist While You Can

The NHL held its 2019 All-Star festivities in San Jose, Calif. One thing we learned from the weekend? King Henrik’s still got it.
Henrik Lundqvist, known as “The King,” put on a show, winning the save-streak competition (he saved 12 shots in a row) before helping the Metropolitan Division win in the championship game by shutting out the Central Division in the first half.
At 36 years old, Lundqvist has been the goalie for the New York Rangers for the past 14 seasons. Not only that, he’s one of the best goalies of all time, moving into sixth place in wins with a victory over Boston on Jan. 19 with No. 446. Eight more wins, likely to happen this season, and Lundqvist will move into fifth place.
Even though Lundqvist’s numbers have declined over the past few years as he’s aged, he was the pick of a couple ESPN panelists last year for the current goalie to win a game (in large part because of his 1.11 goals-against average and six wins in eight career Game 7s).
Lundqvist turns 37 in March. And the Rangers, while in the hunt, need a strong finish to reach the playoffs for the 12th time in Lundqvist’s 14 years. Even though Lundqvist’s desire to lead the Rangers to the Stanley Cup has been well-documented, time may be running out.
Our suggestion? Enjoy the greatness of Henrik Lundqvist while you can.
